CCSS Implementation Concerns

State agencies and public schools nationwide agree that moving to the Common Core State Standards will be beneficial to helping children prepare for the unknown changes bound to come in our future. However, how to implement is difficult for schools to figure out and parents to understand.

The Center for Eduction Policy put out the following:
Year Two of Implementing the Common Core State Standards

 CEP’s Key Findings:
  • The CCSS are more rigorous than previous state standards but will hopefully improve students’ knowledge in English language arts, reading and math;
  • A majority of the CCSS states acknowledge that implementing this new way will require major  change;
  • States are helpiong with professional development materials to help teachers implement the new standards ;
  • States have not yet aligned college admissions requirements to the new Common Core.
  • States hope to fully implement them by 2014-15.
  • States that won the federal Race to the Top Funds expect to implement the standardssooner than non-winning/participating states.
  • Finding adequate resources to implement the CCSS is a major challenge.
  • Many states foresee major technology challenges in implementing online assessments aligned with the CCSS.
